Preview: Angel City at Orlando Pride | 08.07.2208.05.22
Angel City are on the road Sunday, August 7, at 4:00 p.m. PST against the Orlando Pride. The match will stream live on Paramount+ and be broadcast locally on Bally Sports SoCal. An English-language radio broadcast will air on iHeart, and a Spanish-language broadcast will be available on KFWB 980 AM.
ACFC's last game was a 2–3 loss at home to OL Reign last Saturday, July 30. That match saw midfielder Cari Roccaro score her first-ever NWSL goal in the first half, followed by a penalty goal from midfielder Savannah McCaskill; goalkeeper DiDi Haračić saved a penalty kick late in the half. Second-half goals from Reign midfielder Jess Fishlock, defender Sofia Huerta, and forward Tobin Heath closed out the scoring.
Following that result, LA are 5–5–2 for the season and sit in seventh place, one slot out of playoff position.
Orlando's last game, away against Kansas City, was a 2–2 draw. Not unlike Angel City's loss to the Reign, in that match, the Pride went ahead 2–0—following goals by defender Celia and midfielder Julie Doyle—then conceded two, to forwards Elyse Bennett and CeCe Kizer. Orlando are currently in eighth place with a 3–5–5 record.
This will be the second meeting between Orlando and Angel City; their first match, at home on May 8, saw forward Sydney Leroux score in the third minute. Angel City made a trade to acquire Leroux at the end of June following forward Christen Press's season-ending knee injury earlier that month. Leroux currently has 39 career NWSL goals; when she scores her 40th goal, she will become the ninth player in NWSL history to hit that milestone.
After a difficult start to the season—culminating with a 0–6 loss to the Portland Thorns on June 19—the Pride have improved. They are undefeated in their last four matches and have posted two shutouts during that time. Defender Kylie Strom, who saw relatively little playing time before the Portland loss, has been in the lineup consistently since then and has improved the team's defensive shape.
